Booker T. Washington (1856-1915)
Booker T. Washington was born a slave in Virginia.
When he was eight years old, the Thirteenth Amendment made all slaves free.
Booker's mother moved the family to West Virginia.
Booker and his father worked in the salt mines and the coal mines.
Booker went to school at night.
H wanted to become a teacher.
His family was very poor, so he had to walk all the way across Virginia to go to college.

He became a very good teacher at Hampton Institute in Virginia.
Booker was asked to start a new school in Alabama.
He became the principal at the Tuskagee Institute.
Booker helped built many schools for Afican American children across the South.
Booker was the first African American invited to visit the President in the White House.
He went to meet Theodore Roosevelt who felt that Booker's schools were important.
Booker T. Washington died of too much work when he was only 59 years old.
