James Monroe

(1758-1831)

James Monroe was born into a wealthy planter family in Virginia.

He joined George Washington's army to fight the British in the Revolutionary War.

James Monroe was injured in the Battle of Trenton.

After marrying Elizabeth Kortright, James Monroe began his political career.

James Monroe was the ambassador to France and to England.

In 1817, James Monroe was elected the fifth President of the United States.

His presidency was called the "Era of Good Feelings". There were few problems.

James Monroe started the Monroe Doctrine which did not allow European Countries to interfere in American affairs.

After a lifetime of public service, James Monroe and his wife retired to their estate in Virginia.

When his wife died, James Monroe moved to New York. He died in 1831.
