These lessons introduce students to literacy in English.

Letter of the Week

Choose from these learning activities each week for a different letter of the alphabet.
The letters can be presented in any order.
Choose activites by student preference.

Read the "Find Things" story for the Letter.

Write a line of the letter

Print a page or each student in the class to write a line of the Letter of the Week.

Go on a Photo Field Trip

collect digital photos of things found that begin with the Letter.

Letter Talk

Discuss words, things that begin with the letter, actions and modifiers that begin with the letter.

Make a Letter Toy for the Letter of the Week

Use fabric, wood, clay, etc., to make a painted block, a 3-D thingy, or a stuffed, huggable toy

Read a verse of Utter Nonsence

Students will create an illustration for the verse

Play Letter Bingo

Print out Bingo Cards.
Students can use pebbles or markers, or anything else small and plentiful.

Activities:

Do every day
  1. Write the letter in the air.
  2. Write the letter.
  3. Type the letter on a computer.

Do every week
  1. LETTER TABLE: Make a collection of the things that begin with the letter of the week Display during the whole week.
  2. Read the Alphabet Story for the Letter of the Week.
  3. Learn the verse of Utter Nonsense Verse for the letter of the week.
  4. Do Letter Sort with word and pictures cards.
  5. Make a class quilt by gluing cut outs of the letter of the week on a large square, then gluing or stitching the squares together into a quilt to display in classroom.
  6. Make letters by gluing string on cardboard or construction paper.
  7. Make letters out of plastacine, salt clay, any clay-like material. Roll into long "snakes", the create the letters.

Materials
  1. Copy of Utter Nonsense A to Z
    one per teacher
  2. Learning Cards: Word cards & Picture cards (one full set per student):for each word in the Alphabet Stories from Educational Synthesis.
  3. Letter Bingo cards (2-3 different cards per student). Print from Educational Synthesis. Use a set of letter tiles in a basket to use to call the letters. For the Blind: Print the Letter Bingo cards on braile sheets.
  4. String and glue, with construction paper to mount it on.
  5. Clay - either purchased reusable clay or a homemade salt clay.


Materials Needed:

Letter of the Week cut from sandpaper or other textured material.
Let all students handle the letter, feeling the angles, curves, and lines.

Letter of the Week in Braille.
Let students feel and describe the braille letter

Song of the Week: Baa Baa Black Sheep .

Story of the Week: Find B Things.

Verse: B verse of Utter Nonsense.

Glue pen for each student.

Bubbles for each student.

The B Table: Collect items and the braille version of various words that begin with the letter "B". Display on table. Students visit the table in class, and at any free time during the school day.


Weekly Schedule:

Introduce the Letter. Discuss things that begin with B. Learn verse of Utter Nonsense for the letter B. Make the letter B some material. Write the letter B. Visit the B table.

Procedure

Daily:

  1. Pass out the sandpaper letter B and b to each student. Ask all students to say the name of the letter as they feel it. Ask students to describe how it is shaped.
  2. Pass out the braille tile letter B and b to each student. Ask all students to identify the pattern for the letter B.
  3. Recite the Alphabet in unison. Students raise their hands when they say the letter B. Repeat 2-3 times.
  4. Sing the ABC song. Hold up the braille tile/s when they sing the letter B.
  5. Discuss the letter "B" and words that begin with it. As words are thought of, make a braille copy of the word and put it on the "B" table.
  6. Discuss new objects brought in for the "B" table.
  7. Visit the "B" table, add the new object/s and have each student name each object and word on the table.
  8. Have each student pick 1-3 words/items on the "B" table, and say a sentence using that word or item.
  9. Read the story "Find B Things". Use a different student's name each day of the week.
  10. Sing the Song of the Week.

Monday: After daily activity above: Discuss words that begin with the letter B. Let students make or repeat sentences that use the letter B. Tell students about making the B table so they can collect and bring in "B" things by Friday.

Tuesday: After daily activity above: Read the "B" verse of the poem Utter Nonsense. Repeat it until each student can recite it.

Wednesday: After daily activity above: Pass out bubble jars and encourage students to make a B out of bubbles End the lesson by reciting the B verse of Utter Nonsense.

Thursday: After daily activity above: Pass out glue pens and paper. Let students practice writing the letter B and feeling the dried glue to improve their writing. End the lesson by reciting the B verse of Utter Nonsense

Friday: After daily activity above: Visit the B table and let the students identify each of the B objects on the table. Let each student say or repeat a sentence using each object in a sentence. End the lesson by reciting the B verse of Utter Nonsense.
