Technology. The opening picture shows a train crossing a bridge in snowy Canada.

Technology is the use of tools and weapons to make work easier.

Early man used what he could find nearby. He used stone, wood and bones. Later men discovered the use of metals. Modern man uses motors and computers. As men formed cultures they shared their technology and developed new skills and new tools. Sometimes they invented new uses for existing tools.

Weapons were often the reason to develope technology. Early man used weapons mainly to kill food, but as disputes between cultures arose, men used their weapons against their enemies. Humans created more and more useful tools as they also developed more and more effective weapons. They used the tools and weapons to expand their cultures, societies and civilizations.

In the first picture, a man rides a tractor that helps him grow crops. In the next picture, an elderly woman learns to use a computer.

The closing picture shows a space ship lifting off its launch pad.
